  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup cold butter cut into cubes
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 6 apples, peeled, seeded and cut into thin slices
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter cut into cubes
  • 1 beaten egg

Instructions to prepare apple pie:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the cold butter and mix with a pastry cutter or two knives until the mixture resembles a thick pea.
  2. Add the cold water and mix until the dough comes together. Form a flat disc and wrap in plastic. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large bowl, mix the apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon juice.
  4. On a floured surface, roll the dough into a large circle. Place in a 9-inch (23 cm) tart pan and trim the edges.
  5. Add the apple mixture to the dough and cover with the cubed butter.
  6. Brush the edges of the dough with beaten egg. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
